The Classical Revival reddish/tan brick courthouse was built in 1911 to replace an 1847 structure.  It is sited in a city square at 6th and Main streets.  United States Highway 231 is one block to the west.  Frank Pierce Milburn is the building architect.  The building features a working clock in a dome.  Dubois County was created on December 20, 1817 from parts of Perry and Pike counties as the 20th county.  Portersville was the original county seat until 1830 when Jasper took over.  The county is named for War of 1812 hero Toussaint Dubois.  The county seat was named for the Biblical reference to the gemstone. 

Dubois County government consists of a sheriff, an auditor, a clerk, a coroner, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 7 Council Members (legislative.)  A Circuit Court Judge, a Superior Court Judge, and a prosecutor serve Dubois County (judicial.) The county is in southwest Indiana to the northeast of Evansville, Indiana and southwest of Indianapolis, Indiana.  The county center is 7 miles Southeast of Jasper.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Martin, Orange, Crawford, Perry, Spencer, Warrick, Pike, and Daviess counties. 

The area of the county is 427 square miles.  It is 27 out of 92 in the state.  It ranks 35 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 102.2 persons per square mile making it 39 out of 92 in the state.  Dubois County has 60.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 231 goes north to south in the county from Martin County to Spencer County.  The county is an overall rectangle with a wandering northwest border and a missing southeast corner.  Jasper is in the northwest quarter of the county.  Jasper is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 38.3% of the county population.  The county is pronounced DUE-BOYS.  This county is in the Jasper Micropolitan Statistical Area.
