The Modern style concrete and glass building was erected in 1960.  It replaced an 1867 courthouse.  It is at Spring and 1st streets.  Interstate Highway 64 is three blocks west of the site.  Walker, Applegate, Oakes & Ritz are the building architects.  The county was formed on January 2, 1819 from parts of Clark and Harrison counties as the 31st county.  War of 1812 hero General John Floyd is the namesake for the county.  The county seat is named for Albany, New York and has always been the county seat. 

Floyd County government consists of a sheriff, 3 Commissioners, and 7 Council Members.  A Circuit Court Judge and Three Superior Court Judges serve Floyd County.  The county is in southern Indiana on the Ohio River.  Louisville, Kentucky is immediately across the Ohio River from the county.  The county center is 4.3 miles Northwest of New Albany nearer Floyd Knob.  The county surrounded clockwise by Clark County and Kentucky and Harrison and Washington counties. 

The area of the county is 148 square miles.  It is 91 out of 92 in the state.  It ranks 20 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 543.7 persons per square mile making it 7 out of 92 in the state.  Floyd County has 53.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 64 enters the county from Kentucky and heads west into Harrison County.  United States Highway 150 is joined with Interstate Highway 64 from Kentucky, splits and travels northwest into Harrison County.  The county is shaped like a funnel.  New Albany is on the eastern border of the county.  New Albany is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 47.0% of the county population.  This county is in the Louisville/Jefferson County Metropolitan Statistical Area.
