A classic County Capitol and Romanesque Revival red brick courthouse for Gibson County was built in 1884.  It is on a city square at Main, Broadway, Hart, and State streets.  Indiana State Highway 64 is Broadway Street in the town.  Harry, Roy, and Kenneth McDonald provided the designs.  The county was founded on April 1, 1813 out of Knox County as the 8th county with Princeton as the only county seat.  The county is named for Revolutionary War hero John Gibson.  The county seat is named for Congressman William Prince.  Interstate Highway 64 enters from Warrick County, east, and exits into Vanderburgh County, south.  United States Highway 41 crosses the county north to south from Knox County to Vanderburgh County.  The county resembles a spaceship.  The Wabash River forms its western border and the White River forms its northwest border. 

Gibson County government consists of a sheriff, 3 Commissioners, and 7 Council Members.  A Circuit Court Judge and a Superior Court Judge serve Gibson County.  The county is in southwest Indiana on the border with Illinois.  Evansville, Indiana is directly south and Terre Haute, Indiana is north of the county.  The county center is 2.6 miles South-Southwest of Princeton.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Knox, Pike, Warrick, Vanderburgh, and Posey counties and Illinois. 

The area of the county is 487 square miles.  It is 13 out of 92 in the state.  It ranks 51 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 67.8 persons per square mile making it 61 out of 92 in the state.  Gibson County has 55.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Princeton is in the northern half of the county.  Princeton is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 25.2% of the county population.  This county is in the Evansville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
