1882 was the construction year for the Neo-Classical governmental masonry structure.  The dome was removed in 1943.  The county was organized on February 10, 1831 from parts of Madison County and Native American Territory as the 64th county with Marion as the only county seat.  It is named for Captains Samuel and Moses Grant.  Revolutionary War hero General Francis Marion provided the inspiration for the county seat.  He also inspired the name of Marion County.  The courthouse is located on a square at 4th, Washington, 3rd, and Adams streets.  Indiana State Highway 18 is 4th Street.  The courthouse was designed by Elijah E. Myers and features columns. 

Grant County government consists of a sheriff, an auditor, a clerk, a coroner, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 7 Council Members (legislative.)  A Circuit Court Judge, Three Superior Court Judges, and a prosecutor serve Grant County (judicial.) The county is in northeast Indiana.  Indianapolis, Indiana is southwest and Fort Wayne, Indiana is northeast of the county.  The Mississiniwa River flows through the county.  The county center is 6.5 miles South-Southwest of Marion nearer Jonesboro.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Huntington, Wells, Blackford, Delaware, Madison, Tipton, Howard, Miami, and Wabash counties. 

The area of the county is 414 square miles.  It is 30 out of 92 in the state.  It ranks 25 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 161.0 persons per square mile making it 27 out of 92 in the state.  Grant County has 69.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 69 goes north to south through the county from Huntington County to Delaware County.  United States Highway 35 enters from the west, Howard County, and joins Interstate Highway 69 to go south, Delaware County.  The county is a rectangle.  Marion dominates the northern half of the county.  Marion is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 42.5% of the county population.  This county is in the Marion Micropolitan Statistical Area.
