The square working clock tower stands out on this red brick Classical Revival building built in 1885.  The tower was shortened and squared in 1954 and the building was enlarged in 2006.  The building is sited at Main, Washington, Franklin, and Spring streets.  United States Highway 231 is Main Street in this part of the town.  George W. Bunting is the building architect.  The grounds feature a liberty bell replica and military guns.  The county was formed on March 5, 1821 from parts of Sullivan County and Native American Territory as the 34th county.  It is named for Revolutionary War hero General Nathanael Greene.  The county seat is named for Bloomfield, New Jersey.  Burlington served as county seat until 1824 when Bloomfield assumed the role. 

Greene County government consists of a sheriff, an auditor, a clerk, a coroner, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 7 Council Members (legislative.)  A Circuit Court Judge, a Superior Court Judge, and a prosecutor serve Greene County (judicial.) The county is in central Indiana to the southwest of Indianapolis, Indiana and northeast of Evansville, Indiana.  The White River flows through the middle of the county.  The county center is 2.4 miles West-Northwest of Bloomfield.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Owen, Monroe, Lawrence, Martin, Daviess, Knox, Sullivan, and Clay counties. 

The area of the county is 543 square miles.  It is 4 out of 92 in the state.  It ranks 54 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 56.7 persons per square mile making it 68 out of 92 in the state.  Greene County has 38.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 231 goes north to south through the county from Owen County to Daviess County.  The county is a rectangle.  Bloomfield is slightly south of center in the county.  Linton is in the western quarter of the county.  Bloomfield is the county seat and Linton is the largest city.  Bloomfield is 7.4% of the county population while Linton is 16.7% of the county population.  This county is in the Bloomington Metropolitan Statistical Area.
