The Modern concrete and glass skyscraper was built in 1962.  It is at Washington and Delaware streets.  Washington Street is United States Highway 40 in Indianapolis.  Allied Architects & Engineers are the architects.  The county was formed on December 31, 1822 from Native American Territory as the 39th county.  There have been 1824 and 1877 previous courthouses also in Indianapolis, the only county seat.  Marion County was the birthplace of 1 Indiana Governor, Eric J. Holcomb.  Revolutionary War hero General Francis Marion is the namesake of the county.  He is also the namesake of the county seat of Grant County.  The county seat is a combination of the state’s name with the Greek word for “city.”  White River flows through the county.  The Indiana state capitol is located in this county. 

Marion County government consists of a sheriff, an auditor, a clerk, a coroner, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 7 Council Members (legislative.)  A Circuit Court Judge, Forty Superior Court Judges, and a prosecutor serve Marion County (judicial.) The county is in the center of the state.  The geographical center of Indiana is 14 miles north-northwest of Indianapolis in the county.  The county center is in Indianapolis 5.4 miles North-Northwest of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Hamilton, Hancock, Shelby, Johnson, Morgan, Hendricks, and Boone counties. 

The area of the county is 396 square miles.  It is 48 out of 92 in the state.   It ranks 1 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 2467.7 persons per square mile making it 1 out of 92 in the state.  Marion County has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 65 crosses the county northwest to southeast from Boone County to Johnson County.  Interstate Highway 69 enters from the northeast, Hamilton County, and terminates in the county.  Interstate Highway 70 goes east to west from Hancock County to Hendricks County.  Interstate Highway 74 travels northwest to southeast from Hendricks County to Shelby County.  Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd President, is buried in this county.  The county is a rectangle with a small addition on the northeast corner.  Indianapolis dominates the entire county.  Indianapolis is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 90.8% of the county population.  This county is in the Indianapolis-Carmel Metropolitan Statistical Area.
