The Italianate courthouse and working clock tower were built in 1872.  It is on a square at Jefferson, Walnut, Madison and Center streets.  United States Highway 31 is one block east of the site.  A Courts Building was added 1988.  Gordon P. Randall is the current columned courthouse designer.  A county building is across the street.  A Statue of Liberty replica sits in front of the courthouse.  The county was created on February 7, 1835 from St. Joseph County as the 75th county with Plymouth as the only county seat.  It is named for United States Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall.  The county seat is named for Plymouth, Massachusetts. 

Marshall County government consists of a sheriff, 3 Commissioners, and 7 Council Members.  A Circuit Court Judge and Two Superior Court Judges serve Marshall County.  The county is in north central Indiana.  South Bend, Indiana is directly north and Fort Wayne, Indiana is southeast of the county.  The county center is 2.5 miles Southeast of Plymouth.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Saint Joseph, Elkhart, Kosciusko, Fulton, Pulaski, and Starke counties. 

The area of the county is 444 square miles.  It is 24 out of 92 in the state.   It ranks 32 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 103.8 persons per square mile making it 38 out of 92 in the state.  Marshall County has 43.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 6 crosses the extreme northern part of the county east to west from Elkhart County to Saint Joseph County.  United States Highway 30 travels east to west from Kosciusko County to Starke County.  United States Highway 31 goes north to south from Saint Joseph County to Fulton County.  The county is a square.  Plymouth is in the northwest quarter of the county.  Plymouth is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 22.2% of the county population.  This county is in the Plymouth Micropolitan Statistical Area.
