The dome with working clock on the 1910 masonry courthouse makes it unique.  The building is in a square surrounded by Broadway, Main, Court, and 5th streets.  United States Highway 24 Business is Main Street.  Lehman and Schmitt provided the Neo-Classical designs.  There as an 1844 courthouse also in Peru.  The building features columns and the grounds have veteran memorials.  The county was established on January 30, 1833 from parts of Cass County and Native American Territory as the 68th county.  Miamisport was the first county seat with Peru assumed the role in 1834.  The county is named for the Native American tribe.  The county seat is named for the South American country. 

Miami County government consists of a sheriff, an auditor, a clerk, a coroner, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 7 Council Members (legislative.)  A Circuit Court Judge, Two Superior Court Judges, and a prosecutor serve Miami County (judicial.) The county is in northern Indiana.  Fort Wayne, Indiana is east and Indianapolis, Indiana is south of the county.  The Wabash River flows through the county.  The county center is in Peru 1.8 miles Northeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Fulton, Wabash, Grant, Howard, and Cass counties.  

The area of the county is 374 square miles.  It is 61 out of 92 in the state.   It ranks 44 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 96.2 persons per square mile making it 42 out of 92 in the state.  Miami County has 38.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 24 crosses the county east to west from Wabash County to Cass County.  United States Highway 31 goes north to south from Fulton County to Howard County.  The county is shaped like a capital letter L.  Peru is located south and west of center in the county.  Peru is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 30.5% of the county population.  The county is pronounced MIE-AM-EE.  The county seat is pronounced PE-ROO.  This county is in the Peru Micropolitan Statistical Area.
