The masonry and tan and red brick courthouse was constructed in 1875 and remodeled in 1941 and 1986.  It is located at Main and Washington streets.  Washington Street is United States Highway 231.  George W. Bunting is the architect in the Second Empire style.  The building features columns and the grounds have veteran memorials.  The county was established on December 21, 1822 from Native American Territory as the 43rd county with Crawfordsville as the only county seat.  Revolutionary War General Richard Montgomery inspired the name of the county.  Revolutionary War hero and Indian fighter Colonel William Crawford provided his name for the county seat.  He is also the namesake of Crawford County.  Montgomery County was the birthplace of 1 Indiana Governor, James A. Mount. 

Montgomery County government consists of a sheriff, an auditor, a clerk, a coroner, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 7 Council Members (legislative.)  A Circuit Court Judge, Three Superior Court Judges, and a prosecutor serve Montgomery County (judicial.) The county is in western Indiana.  Indianapolis, Indiana is southeast and Gary, Indiana is north of the county.  The county center is in Crawfordsville 1.2 miles Southwest of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Tippecanoe, Clinton, Boone, Hendricks, Putnam, Parke, and Fountain counties. 

The area of the county is 505 square miles.  It is 9 out of 92 in the state.   It ranks 39 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 75.1 persons per square mile making it 54 out of 92 in the state.  Montgomery County has 57.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 74 crosses east to west through the county from Boone County to Fountain County.  United States Highway 136 parallels Interstate Highway 74 from Boone to Fountain counties.  United States Highway 231 goes north to south from Tippecanoe County from Putnam County.  The county is a square with Crawfordsville located at or near the county’s center.  Crawfordsville is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 43.0% of the county population.  This county is in the Crawfordsville Micropolitan Statistical Area.
