A classic red brick and stone courthouse was built in 1887 and sits on a square at Main, Orange, Jefferson, and York streets. Indiana State Highway 9 is Orange Street in the town. E. O. Fallis and Company are the architects of this Richardsonian Romanesque structure. The building features a working clock tower. The grounds have a fountain and gazebo. A county building is across the street. The county was established on February 7, 1835 from Native American Territory as the 76th county. It is named for United States Senator James Noble. The county seat is named for the ancient name for Britain.
Noble County government consists of a sheriff, an auditor, a clerk, a coroner, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive). It has 7 Council Members (legislative.) A Circuit Court Judge, Two Superior Court Judges, and a prosecutor serve Noble County (judicial.) The county is in northeast Indiana. Fort Wayne, Indiana is directly southeast and South Bend, Indiana is northwest of the county. The Elkhart River originates in the county. The county center is 5.6 miles Northeast of Albion nearer Brimfield. The county is surrounded clockwise by La Grange, Steuben, De Kalb, Allen, Whitley, Kosciusko, and Elkhart counties. There were 1847 and 1860 courthouses also in Albion. Sparta (1836), Augusta (1837), Port Mitchell (1844), and Albion (1846) have all been the county seat.

It has a density of 115.5 persons per square mile making it 32 out of 92 in the state. Noble County has 46.1% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 6 crosses the county east to west from De Kalb County to Elkhart County. The county is a rectangle with the southwest corner missing. The county seat is located near the county center. The largest city is in the northeast quarter of the county. Albion is the county seat and Kendallville is the largest city. Albion is 4.7% of the county population while Kendallville is 21.7% of the county population. The county seat is pronounced AL-BEE-ON. This county is in the Kendallville Micropolitan Statistical Area.
