The red brick courthouse with white columns was built in 1844. An addition was added in 2002. It is sited on Main between Henrietta and Mulberry streets. Indiana State Highway 262 is Main Street. Colonel Abel C. Pepper provided for the Greek Revival designs. The grounds feature veteran memorials and a canon. The county was established on January 4, 1844 as the 89th county and named for the bordering Ohio River. It was taken from Dearborn County with Rising Sun as the only county seat. The county seat is a descriptive name of the sunrise over the Ohio River.

Rising Sun is the county seat and as the only incorporated city it is also the largest city. It is 37.7% of the county population. This county is in the Cincinnati-Middletown Metropolitan Statistical Area.
