The red brick structure was built in 1867 on Maumee Street between Gale and Wayne streets.  United States Highway 20 is Maumee Street in the town.  The courthouse was designed by Freeborn Patterson in New England and Greek Revival style.  The facility was enlarged in 1937.  The building features a tower.  A veteran memorial is on the circle in front of the courthouse.  There was also an 1841 courthouse.  Steuben County was cut from La Grange County on February 7, 1837 as the 85^th county with Angola as the only county seat.  It is named for Revolutionary War hero Baron Frederick von Steuben.  The county seat is named for Angola, New York. 

Steuben County government consists of a sheriff, an auditor, a clerk, a coroner, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 7 Council Members (legislative.)  A Circuit Court Judge, a Superior Court Judge, and a prosecutor serve Steuben County (judicial.) The county is in the northeast corner of the state.  Michigan is on its northern border and Ohio is on its eastern border.  The county center is in Angola 1.5 miles North of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Michigan and Ohio and De Kalb, Noble, and La Grange counties. 

The area of the county is 309 square miles.  It is 78 out of 92 in the state.  It ranks 46 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 111.5 persons per square mile making it 33 out of 92 in the state.  Steuben County has 41.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 69 goes north to south through the county from Michigan to De Kalb County.  Interstate Highways 80/90 go east to west from Ohio to La Grange County.  United States Highway 20 parallels Interstate Highways 80/90 from Ohio to La Grange County.  The county is a square with Angola located at or near the center of the county.  Angola is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 27.2% of the county population.  The county is pronounced STUE-BEN.  The county seat is pronounced AN-GOE-LA.  This county is in the Angola Micropolitan Statistical Area.
