The tall clock tower dominates the tan stone courthouse built in 1894.  It is sited in a city square surrounded by Jefferson, Court, Madison, and Main streets.  Indiana State Highway 19 is Jefferson Street in the town.  Adolph Scherer was the designer of the Romanesque Classical Revival courthouse.  The building was renovated in 1992.  The county was founded on January 15, 1844 from Native American Territory as the 91st county where Tipton has always been the county seat.  Battle of Tippecanoe hero John Tipton inspired the name of the county and county seat. 

The area of the county is 261 square miles.  It is 83 out of 92 in the state.  It ranks 81 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 58.8 persons per square mile making it 66 out of 92 in the state.  Tipton County has 44.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 31 goes north to south through the county from Howard County to Hamilton County.  The county is a rectangle.  The City of Tipton is in the southern third of the county. 

Tipton County government consists of a sheriff, an auditor, a clerk, a coroner, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 7 Council Members (legislative.)  A Circuit Court Judge and a prosecutor serve Tipton County (judicial.) The county is located in central Indiana.  Indianapolis, Indiana is south of the county and Fort Wayne, Indiana is northeast of the county.  The county center is 2.2 miles North of Tipton.  Tipton is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 34.4% of the county population.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Howard, Grant, Madison, Hamilton, and Clinton counties.  This county is in the Kokomo Metropolitan Statistical Area.
