A classic Richardsonian Romanesque stone courthouse was constructed in Liberty in 1890.  It is located on Main, Union, Market, and Seminary streets.  Main Street is United States Highway 27.  George W. Bunting is the building architect.  The structure was renovated in 2006.  The facility has a clock tower and the grounds feature a canon and gazebo.  The county was established on January 5, 1821 from parts of Fayette, Franklin, and Wayne counties as the 35th county.  Brownsville was the county seat until 1823 when Liberty assumed the county seat.  The county name comes from the “union” of these counties’ parts.  The county seat is named for Liberty, Virginia. 

The area of the county is 161 square miles.  It is 90 out of 92 in the state.  It ranks 91 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 44.0 persons per square mile making it 82 out of 92 in the state.  Union County has 36.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 27 enters the county from the north, Wayne County, and exits to the southeast, Ohio.  The county is a square.  Liberty is located near the center of the county. 

Union County government consists of a sheriff, 3 Commissioners, and 7 Council Members.  A Circuit Court Judge serves Union County.  Union County is located in eastern Indiana on the border with Ohio.  Indianapolis, Indiana is west and Cincinnati, Ohio is southeast of the county.  The county center is 2.7 miles Southeast of Liberty.  Liberty is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 28.9% of the county population.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Wayne County and Ohio and Franklin and Fayette counties.
