A Modern concrete and masonry courthouse was built in 1969.  It is sited on Martin Luther King Boulevard between Locust and Sycamore streets.  Indiana State Highway 62 is four blocks northwest of the site.  The designers were Holabird & Root.  The county was formed on January 7, 1818 from parts of Gibson, Posey, and Warrick counties as the 22nd county.  There was an 1891 courthouse also in Evansville, the only county seat.  Revolutionary War hero Henry Vanderburgh is the namesake for the county.  The county seat is named for settler Robert Evans. 

Vanderburgh County government consists of a sheriff, an auditor, a clerk, a coroner, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 7 Council Members (legislative.)  A Circuit Court Judge, Seven Superior Court Judges, and a prosecutor serve Vanderburgh County (judicial.) The county is in the southwest part of Indiana on the Ohio River border with Kentucky.  Indianapolis, Indiana is northeast and Louisville, Kentucky is east of the county.  The county center is 8 miles North of Evansville in Darmstadt.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Gibson and Warrick counties and Kentucky and Posey County. 

The area of the county is 233 square miles.  It is 85 out of 92 in the state.  It ranks 8 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 773.1 persons per square mile making it 4 out of 92 in the state.  Vanderburgh County has 65.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 64 crosses the northern border of the county east to west from Warrick County to Posey County.  Interstate Highway 164 spurs south into Evansville and terminates.  United States Highway 41 enters the county from the north, Gibson County, and exits south, Kentucky.  The county is shaped like the State of Massachusetts standing on its head.  Evansville is in the southeast quarter of the county on the Ohio River.  Evansville is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 65.1% of the county population.  The county is pronounced VAN-DER-BERG.  This county is in the Evansville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
