The masonry Neo-Classical courthouse was built in 1925.  It is situated at Market, Main, Extension, and Vermillion streets.  Indiana State Highway 63 is seven blocks to the west of the site.  The courthouse was designed by Halbert L. Fillinger and John B. Bayard.  The building features faux columns.  The grounds have veteran memorials and a painted giraffe.  The county was created on January 2, 1824 from parts of Parke County and Native American Territory as the 50th county with Newport as the only county seat.  It is named for the Vermilion River.  The county seat is named for Newport, Delaware. 

Vermillion County government consists of a sheriff, 3 Commissioners, and 7 Council Members.  A Circuit Court Judge serves Vermillion County.  The county is in western Indiana on the border with Illinois.  The Wabash River forms its eastern border.  Indianapolis, Indiana is east and Terre Haute, Indiana is directly south of the county.  The county center is 6.7 miles Southwest of Newport nearer Dana.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Warren, Fountain, Parke, and Vigo counties and Illinois. 

The area of the county is 257 square miles.  It is 84 out of 92 in the state.  It ranks 80 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 60.1 persons per square mile making it 64 out of 92 in the state.  Vermillion County has 57.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 74 crosses the northern tip of the county east to west from Fountain County to Illinois.  United States Highway 36 crosses east to west in the middle of the county from Parke County to Illinois.  United States Highway 41 goes north to south from Warren County to Vigo County.  United States Highway 136 parallels Interstate Highway 74 from Warren County to Illinois.  The county is shaped like a capital letter I.  Newport is located near the eastern border of the county.  Clinton is in the southeast corner of the county.  Newport is the county seat and Clinton is the largest city.  Newport is 2.7% of the county population while Clinton is 31.3% of the county population.  The county is pronounced VER-MIL-YON.  This county is in the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area.
