The red brick, masonry and stone courthouse for Wabash County was built in 1878.  The facility is on Wabash, Main, Court, and Hill streets.  Indiana State Highway 13 passes in front of the building as Wabash Street.  B. V. Enos and Son are the building architects for this Classical Revival courthouse.  The building features a working clock tower.  On the grounds are veteran memorials and a Lincoln statue.  A Justice Center is across the street.  The county was established on January 30, 1833 from Native American Territory as the 69th county with Wabash as the only county seat.  It is named for the Wabash River.  The river’s name is Native American for “pure white.”  The county seat is also named for the river.  Wabash County was the birthplace of 1 Indiana Governor, Thomas R. Marshall. 

Wabash County government consists of a sheriff, an auditor, a clerk, a coroner, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 7 Council Members (legislative.)  A Circuit Court Judge, a Superior Court Judge, and a prosecutor serve Wabash County (judicial.) The county is in northeast Indiana.  Fort Wayne, Indiana is east and Indianapolis, Indiana is southwest of the county.  The Wabash River flows through the middle of the county.  The county center is 4.4 miles North-Northeast of Wabash nearer Speicherville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Kosciusko, Whitley, Huntington, Grant, Miami, and Fulton counties. 

The area of the county is 412 square miles.  It is 32 out of 92 in the state.  It ranks 53 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 75.2 persons per square mile making it 53 out of 92 in the state.  Wabash County has 55.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 24 goes east to west through the county from Huntington County to Miami County.  The county is a tall rectangle with the northeast corner missing.  The City of Wabash is in the southwest quarter of the county.  Wabash is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 33.7% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced WA-BASH.  This county is in the Wabash Micropolitan Statistical Area.
