The Modern building courthouse of dark red/brown brick and concrete was constructed in 1976. It is on Main Street between Illinois and Broadway streets. Indiana State Highway 39 is Illinois Street. Longardner & Associates are the courthouse designers. There was an 1894 courthouse that was destroyed by a tornado in 1974. The grounds feature a liberty bell, a gazebo/stage, and veteran memorials. The county was formed on February 1, 1835 from Native American Territory as the 70th county. Monticello has always been the county seat. It is named for Battle of Tippecanoe hero Isaac White. The county seat is named for the estate of Thomas Jefferson.

A Circuit Court Judge, a Superior Court Judge, and a prosecutor serve White County (judicial.) White County is in northwest Indiana. Indianapolis, Indiana is southeast and Gary, Indiana is northwest of the county. The Tippecanoe River flows through the county. The county center is 3.8 miles West of Monticello nearer Reynolds. The county is surrounded clockwise by Pulaski, Cass, Carroll, Tippecanoe, Benton, and Jasper counties.
The area of the county is 505 square miles. It is 10 out of 92 in the state. It ranks 62 out of 92 in population in the state. It has a density of 48.9 persons per square mile making it 79 out of 92 in the state. White County has 46.4% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 65 crosses the southwest corner of the county from Jasper County, west, to Tippecanoe County, south. United States Highway 24 goes east to west from Cass County to Jasper County. United States Highway 231 parallels Interstate Highway 65 from Jasper to Tippecanoe counties. United States Highway 421 travels north to southeast from Pulaski County to Carroll County. The county looks like a small letter r. Monticello is on the central eastern border of the county. Monticello is the county seat and the largest city. It is 22.3% of the county population.
