The masonry courthouse was built in 1916 in Second Renaissance style.  It sits on a square at 2nd, Main, Eisenhower, and State streets.  Mamie Eisenhower Avenue is Old United States Highway 30 Business.  Norman T. Vorse provided the building designs.  The structure features external columns and internal marble walls.  It is sited in a park-like environment.  The county was organized on January 13, 1846 as the 32nd county with an 1868 courthouse in Boonesboro with Boone taking the county seat in 1892.  The county was taken from Polk County.  Boone County is named for Frontiersman Daniel Boone’s son Nathan Boone.  The county seat has the same source for its name.  Boone County was the birthplace of 1 Iowa Governor, Norman A. Erbe. 

Boone County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Supervisors.  Thirty-one District Court Judges and Thirty-three Magistrates serve Boone, Bremer, Butler, Calhoun, Carroll, Cerro Gordo, Floyd, Franklin, Greene, Hamilton, Hancock, Hardin, Humboldt, Marshall, Mitchell, Pocahontas, Sac, Story, Webster, Winnebago, Worth, and Wright counties.  The county is directly northwest of Des Moines, Iowa in central Iowa.  The county center is 7.4 miles Northwest of Boone nearer Ogden.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Hamilton, Story, Polk, Dallas, Greene, and Webster counties. 

The county has an area of 572 square miles.  It is 42 of 99 in the state.  It ranks 23 out of 99 in population in the state.  It has a density of 46.7 persons per square mile making it 25 out of 99 in the state.  Boone County has 68.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 30 crosses the county east to west from Story County to Greene County.  United States Highway 169 goes north to south from Webster County to Dallas County.  The county is a square.  The City of Boone is located slightly east of center in the county.  Boone is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 46.7% of the county population.  This county is in the Boone Micropolitan Statistical Area.
