The Modern and Art Deco type tan brick and masonry building was erected in 1940.  There was an 1881 courthouse also in Charles City, the only county seat.  The building is on a square at Main, Gilbert, Jackson and Court streets.  United States Highway 218 Business is Gilbert Street.  Hansen and Waggoner are the building designers.  The facility features marble entrances and the grounds have memorial pyramids.  The county was created on December 15, 1851 from Chickasaw County as the 69^th county.  It is named for Sergeant Charles Floyd of the Lewis and Clark expedition.  The county seat is named for the son of one of the town’s settlers. 

Floyd County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Supervisors.  Thirty-one District Court Judges and Thirty-three Magistrates serve Floyd, Boone, Bremer, Butler, Calhoun, Carroll, Cerro Gordo, Franklin, Greene, Hamilton, Hancock, Hardin, Humboldt, Marshall, Mitchell, Pocahontas, Sac, Story, Webster, Winnebago, Worth, and Wright counties.  The county is situated in northern Iowa.  Waterloo, Iowa is southeast and Des Moines, Iowa is southwest.  The county center is 10.2 miles West of Charles City nearer Rockford.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Mitchell, Howard, Chickasaw, Bremer, Butler, Franklin, and Cerro Gordo counties. 

The county has an area of 501 square miles.  It is 72 of 99 in the state.  It ranks 49 out of 99 in population in the state.  It has a density of 31.2 persons per square mile making it 38 out of 99 in the state.  Floyd County has 67.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 18 goes east to west through the county from Chickasaw County to Cerro Gordo County.  United States Highway 218 crosses north to south from Mitchell County to Chickasaw County.  The county is a square.  Charles City is in the eastern third of the county.  Charles City is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 47.3% of the county population.
