1891 was the construction year for the Romanesque stone structure.  It succeeded the 1870 courthouse also in Grundy Center.  Holland was the first county seat replaced by Grundy Center in 1896.  Kramer & Zoll are the building designers.  Outside the structure is a Liberty Statue, a gazebo, and memorial benches.  Inside features wooden stairs.  The county was formed on January 15, 1851 from Black Hawk County as the 61st county.  It is named for United States Attorney General Felix Grundy.  The county seat has the same name source.  The courthouse is on a square at 7th Street, G Avenue, 8th Street, and H Avenue.  G Avenue is Iowa State Highway 14. 

Grundy County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Twenty-seven District Court Judges and Sixteen Magistrates serve Grundy, Allamakee, Black Hawk, Buchanan, Chickasaw, Clayton, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Howard, and Winneshiek counties.  The county is situated in central Iowa immediately west of Waterloo, Iowa.  The county center is 1.4 miles North of Grundy Center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Butler, Black Hawk, Tama, Marshall, Hardin, and Franklin counties. 

The county has an area of 503 square miles.  It is 71 of 99 in the state.  It ranks 60 out of 99 in population in the state.  It has a density of 24.5 persons per square mile making it 56 out of 99 in the state.  Grundy County has 67.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 20 goes east to west in the county from Black Hawk County to Hardin County.  The county shaped resembles a capital letter P.  Grundy Center is south of center in the county.  Grundy Center is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 22.7% of the county population.  This county is in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.
