A unique top on the masonry and stone courthouse, built in 1910, is at 2nd Avenue, 6th Street, 1st Avenue, and 7th Street.  United States Highway 30 is 7th Street in Logan.  Joseph E. Mills was the Classical Revival courthouse designer.  The building has columns and the grounds feature veteran memorials.  The county was formed on January 15, 1851 and named for United States President William H. Harrison.  The county was taken from Pottawattamie County as the 63rd county.  Logan is named for Mexican War General John A. Logan.  Magnolia was the first county seat until 1876 when Logan took over.  There were courthouses in Magnolia dated in 1873 and in Logan dated in 1876. 

Harrison County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Supervisors.  Eleven District Court Judges and Sixteen Magistrates serve Harrison, Audubon, Cass, Fremont, Mills, Montgomery, Page, Pottawattamie, and Shelby counties.  The county is in western Iowa on the Missouri River border with Nebraska.  Sioux City, Iowa is north and Council Bluffs, Iowa is south of the county.  The county center is 4.1 miles North-Northwest of Logan nearer Magnolia.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Monona, Crawford, Shelby, and Pottawattamie counties and Nebraska. 

The county has an area of 697 square miles.  It is 14 of 99 in the state.  It ranks 53 out of 99 in population in the state.  It has a density of 20.9 persons per square mile making it 69 out of 99 in the state.  Harrison County has 56.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 29 crosses the county north to south from Monona County to Pottawattamie County.  United States Highway 30 goes northeast to southwest from Crawford County to Nebraska.  The county looks like a capital letter L with wavy hair on its western border.  Logan is in the southern third of the county.  Missouri Valley is in the southwest corner of the county.  Logan is the county seat and Missouri Valley is the largest city.  Logan is 9.5% of the county population while Missouri Valley is 18.4% of the county population.  This county is in the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area.
