The Art Deco courthouse for Jones County was built in 1935 of tan brick and masonry.  It is located on Main Street between High and Jackson streets.  Iowa State Highway 64 is 9 blocks east of the site.  Dougher, Rich, and Woodburn provided the designs.  The grounds feature a memorial wall.  The county was established on December 21, 1837 from Native American Territory as the 17^th county.  Edinburgh was the first county seat until 1847 when Anamosa took over.  There was an 1848 courthouse in Anamosa.  It is named for Senator George Wallace Jones.  The county seat’s name comes from the Native American for “little dog.” 

Jones County government consists of a sheriff, a recorder, an attorney, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Twenty-six District Court Judges and Seventeen Magistrates serve Jones, Benton, Iowa, Johnson, Linn, and Tama counties (judicial.) The county is located in eastern Iowa directly east of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  The county center is 9.2 miles Northeast of Anamosa nearer Scotch Grove.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Delaware, Dubuque, Jackson, Clinton, Cedar, and Linn counties. 

The county has an area of 575 square miles.  It is 39 of 99 in the state.  It ranks 31 out of 99 in population in the state.  It has a density of 35.9 persons per square mile making it 33 out of 99 in the state.  Jones County has 58.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 151 crosses the county northeast to southwest from Dubuque County to Linn County.  The county is a square.  Anamosa is in the western quarter of the county.  Anamosa is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 26.4% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced AN-A-MOE-SA.  This county is in the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area.
