The columned Romanesque and Greek style courthouse was built in 1933.   It is on 3rd Avenue between 1st Southwest and 1st Northeast streets.  United States Highway 151 Business is two blocks north.  The structure was restored in 2008 after a flood.  Joseph W. Royer and James A. Wetmore are the architects of this masonry structure.  The facility sits on an island in the Cedar River.  Marion was the original county seat with an 1855 courthouse.  Cedar Rapids became the county seat in 1919.  The county was formed on December 21, 1837 from Native American Territory as the 19th county.  The county is named for Missouri Senator Lewis Linn.  Cedar Rapids is named for the river. 

Linn County government consists of a sheriff, a recorder, an attorney, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 3 Supervisors (legislative.)  Twenty-six District Court Judges and Seventeen Magistrates serve Linn, Benton, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, and Tama counties (judicial.) Linn County is in eastern Iowa.  Davenport, Iowa is southeast and Des Moines, Iowa is southwest of the county.  The county center is 6.7 miles North of Cedar Rapids in Robins.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Delaware, Jones, Cedar, Johnson, Iowa, Benton, and Buchanan counties. 

The county has an area of 718 square miles.  It is 10 of 99 in the state.  It ranks 2 out of 99 in population in the state.  It has a density of 320.8 persons per square mile making it 3 out of 99 in the state.  Linn County has 91.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 380 goes northwest to south in the county from Benton County to Johnson County.  United States Highway 30 crosses east to west from Cedar County to Benton County.  United States Highway 151 travels northeast to southwest from Jones County to Benton County.  United States Highway 218 parallels Interstate Highway 380 from Benton County and joins it into Johnson County.  The county is a rectangle.  Cedar Rapids occupies a large portion of the southwest part of the county.  Cedar Rapids is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 59.8% of the county population.  This county is in the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area.
