The Classical Revival stone and masonry courthouse was constructed in 1884.  The facility is on a square at Main, Church, and Center streets, and 1st Avenue.  Iowa State Highway 14 is two blocks east of the site.  J. C. Cochrane is the architect.  The structure features a working clock tower and Lady Justice over the entrances.  The structure was severely damaged in 2018 by a tornado.  The county is created on December 13, 1846 from Jasper County as the 41st county.  Marietta was the first county seat until 1860 when Marshalltown assumed the role.  The county is named for Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Marshall as is the county seat. 

Marshall County government consists of a sheriff, a recorder, an attorney, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 3 Supervisors (legislative.)  Thirty-one District Court Judges and Thirty-three Magistrates serve Marshall, Boone, Bremer, Butler, Calhoun, Carroll, Cerro Gordo, Floyd, Franklin, Greene, Hamilton, Hancock, Hardin, Humboldt, Mitchell, Pocahontas, Sac, Story, Webster, Winnebago, Worth, and Wright counties (judicial.) The county is in central Iowa.  Des Moines, Iowa is southwest and Cedar Rapids, Iowa is east of the county.  The county center is in Marshalltown 2.1 miles Southwest of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Grundy, Tama, Poweshiek, Jasper, Story, and Hardin counties. 

The county has an area of 572 square miles.  It is 43 of 99 in the state.  It ranks 15 out of 99 in population in the state.  It has a density of 70.1 persons per square mile making it 16 out of 99 in the state.  Marshall County has 82.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 30 crosses the county east to west from Tama County to Story County.  The county is a square.  Marshalltown is in the eastern half of the county.  Marshalltown is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 68.8% of the county population.  This county is in the Marshalltown Micropolitan Statistical Area.
