The Modern concrete and glass building was constructed in 1958. The building is on a square at Washington, 8th, Broadway, and 9th streets. United States Highway 81 passes two blocks to the east. The site features a memorial wall and the building has half marble walls. Williamson-Loebsack and Associates were the architects. Since its founding on March 27, 1867, a classic courthouse existed from 1889, also in Concordia, the only county seat. The county was taken from Washington County as the 72nd county. The county is named for Colonel William F. Cloud. The county seat is named for Concordia, Missouri. Cloud County was the birthplace of 1 Kansas Governor, Frank Carlson.

The county is rectangular. The county center is 8.1 miles South-Southwest of Concordia. The county is surrounded clockwise by Republic, Washington, Clay, Ottawa, Mitchell, and Jewell counties. Concordia is in the northern quarter of the county. Concordia is the county seat and the largest city. It is 56.5% of the county population.

United States Highway 24 crosses east to west in the county from Clay County to Mitchell County. United States Highway 81 goes north to south from Republic County to Ottawa County. The Republic River cuts the northeast part of the county. The county seat is pronounced KON-KOER-DEE-A.
