The Art Deco style, tan brick courthouse in Ulysses was built in 1930.  It is on a square of Glenn Street, Grant Street, Court Street and Central Street.  There are mosaic designs along the top of the building.  Smith and English were the building designers.  This current courthouse replaced an 1888 courthouse which used to be in front of this building.  Ulysses has always been the county seat.  United States Highway 160 is three blocks to the south.  The county was created on March 20, 1873 from parts of Finney and Hamilton counties as the 80th county.  The county and the county seat are named for Civil War General and United States President Ulysses S. Grant.
