The Classical Revival masonry and concrete building was constructed in 1912 at 3rd and Walnut streets. Kansas State Highway 92 is one block to the west of the site. William P. Feth is the building designer. The building was remodeled in 1951 and a Judicial Building added in 2000. Earlier there was an 1873 classic courthouse. The interior features a rotunda, marble stairs, and marble half walls. The exterior features large columns. The county was formed on August 25, 1855 as an original county (14th county.) Kickapoo (1855), Delaware (1856), and Leavenworth (1856) have all served as the county seat. The county and city are named for Colonel Henry H. Leavenworth founder of Fort Leavenworth.

Missouri is directly east of the county across the Missouri River. The county center is 13.1 miles Southwest of Leavenworth nearer Tonganoxie. The county is surrounded clockwise by Missouri and Wyandotte, Johnson, Douglas, Jefferson, and Atchison counties.

United States Highways 24/40 parallel Interstate Highway 70 from Wyandotte to Douglas counties. United States Highway 73 travels north to south from Atchison County to Wyandotte County. The county’s overall shape looks like a small letter r. The City of Leavenworth is in the northeast corner of the county. Leavenworth is the county seat and the largest city. It is 45.6% of the county population. This county is in the Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area.
