The working clock tower gives the stone 1899 courthouse class. It stands out on Lincoln Street between 2nd and 3rd streets. Kansas State Highway 14 is four blocks to the west of the site. Charles W. Squires provided the Second Empire and Richardsonian Romanesque courthouse designs. There was also an 1873 courthouse in Lincoln, the only county seat. The county was founded on February 26, 1867 from Native American Territory as the 53rd county. Lincoln County and Lincoln Center (the official name of the county seat) are both named for President Abraham Lincoln.

Salina, Kansas is immediately to the southeast of the county. The Saline River flows through the county. The county center is 3.4 miles West-Northwest of Lincoln. The county is surrounded clockwise by Mitchell, Ottawa, Saline, Ellsworth, Russell, and Osborne counties.

It has a density of 4.1 persons per square mile making it 79 out of 105 in the state. Lincoln County has 56.3% of its population in its incorporated areas. There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county. The county is a rectangle. The county seat is located slightly east of center in the county. Lincoln is the county seat and the largest city. It is 39.8% of the county population.
