The light red and tan brick Modern facility, built in 1965, replaced an 1887 structure in Russell Springs.  The architects were Kiene and Bradley.  It is located on 2nd Street between Cherry and Plum streets.  United States Highway 83 is four blocks to the west of the courthouse.  A wolf statue sits in front of the courthouse.  Logan County was established on February 24, 1887 from Wallace County as the 101st county.  Russell Springs was the original county seat until Oakley became the county seat in 1963.  The county is named for Civil War General John Alexander Logan.  Oakley is named for the mother of one of the city founders. 

Logan County government consists of a sheriff, a clerk, an attorney, a treasurer, a coroner, and an appraiser (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Eight District Court Judges serve Logan, Cheyenne, Rawlins, Sheridan, Sherman, Thomas, and Wallace counties (judicial.) The county is in the northwest part of the state.  Dodge City, Kansas is southeast and Salina, Kansas is east of the county.  The North Fork of the Smoky Hill River flows in the county.  The county center is 26.8 miles Southwest of Oakley near Russell Springs.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Thomas, Gove, Scott, Wichita, Wallace, and Sherman counties. 

The area of the county is 1073 square miles.  It is 11 out of 105 in the state.  It ranks 86 out of 105 in population in the state.  It has a density of 2.6 persons per square mile making it 94 out of 105 in the state.  Logan County has 80.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 40 goes east to west in the county from Gove County to Wallace County.  United States Highway 83 travels north to south from Thomas County to Scott County.  The county is a rectangle.  Oakley is in the northeast corner of the county and extends into Gove and Thomas counties.  Oakley is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 74.2% of the county population.
