The white columns and breaks in the red brick and masonry Classical Revival design are unique in the 1928 structure.  Daniel Gerow provided the building design.  It is located on Fowler Street between Belle Meade and Grant streets.  United States Highway 160 is two blocks to the south of the courthouse.  There was also an 1888 facility in Meade since the county’s March 20, 1873 founding.   The county was taken from parts of Finney, Ford, and Seward counties as the 85th county.  The county and county seat are named for Civil War General George G. Meade. 

Meade County government consists of a sheriff, a clerk, an attorney, a treasurer, a coroner, and an appraiser (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Six District Court Judges serve Meade, Clark, Comanche, Ford, Gray, and Kiowa counties (judicial.) The county is in the southwest on the border with Oklahoma.  Dodge City, Kansas is immediately to the northeast of the county.  The county center is 1.4 miles South-Southwest of Meade.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Gray, Ford, and Clark counties and Oklahoma and Seward and Haskell counties. 

The area of the county is 978 square miles.  It is 18 out of 105 in the state.  It ranks 73 out of 105 in population in the state.  It has a density of 4.1 persons per square mile making it 77 out of 105 in the state.  Meade County has 75.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 54 crosses the county from northeast to southwest from Clark County to Seward County.  United States Highway 160 goes east to west from Clark County to Seward County.  The county is an overall rectangle.  The City of Meade is in the northern third of the county.  Meade is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 37.0% of the county population.
