Columns and red brick are the features of the Classical Revival courthouse built in 1924 on Court Street between 3rd and 4th streets.  The site is one block west of United States Highway 83 passing through the town.  Mann and Company were the architects for the courthouse.  A memorial slab sits on the grounds.  The county was established on March 20, 1873 from Native American Territory as the 87th county with Scott City as the only county seat.  The county and county seat are named for Mexican War General Winfield Scott.  He is also the namesake for the county seat of Bourbon County. 

Scott County government consists of a sheriff, a clerk, an attorney, a treasurer, a coroner, and an appraiser (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Seven District Court Judges serve Scott, Finney, Greeley, Hamilton, Kearny, and Wichita counties (judicial.) The county is located in western Kansas.  Dodge City, Kansas is southwest and Salina, Kansas is northeast of the county.  The county center is .7 miles West of Scott City.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Gove, Lane, Finney, Kearny, Wichita, and Logan counties. 

The area of the county is 718 square miles.  It is 63 out of 105 in the state.  It ranks 67 out of 105 in population in the state.  It has a density of 7.2 persons per square mile making it 61 out of 105 in the state.  Scott County has 79.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 83 goes north to south through the county from Logan County to Finney County.  The county is a tall rectangle.  Scott City is located in the center of the county.  Scott City is the county seat and the largest, and only incorporated, city.  It is 79.9% of the county population.
