The tan brick and masonry Classical Revival courthouse in Hoxie was built in 1917 and is on a square formed by 9th, Queen, 8th, and Royal streets.  Kansas State Highway 23 is one block to the east of the site.  Thomas W. Williamson was the designer for this building.  Marble stairs are included inside the building.  Since the March 20, 1873 county organization, Hoxie had an 1886 courthouse.  Keith was the first county seat with Hoxie assuming the role in 1886.  The county was taken from Native American Territory as the 89th county.  Sheridan County is named for Civil War General Phillip H. Sheridan.  Hoxie is named for railroad official H. M. Hoxie. 

Sheridan County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Eight District Court Judges serve Sheridan, Cheyenne, Logan, Rawlins, Sherman, Thomas, and Wallace counties.  The county is in northwest Kansas.  Salina, Kansas is east and Dodge City, Kansas is south of the county.  The county center is in Hoxie .5 miles West of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Decatur, Norton, Graham, Gove, and Thomas counties. 

The area of the county is 896 square miles.  It is 28 out of 105 in the state.  It ranks 96 out of 105 in population in the state.  It has a density of 2.7 persons per square mile making it 92 out of 105 in the state.  Sheridan County has 56.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 24 crosses east to west in the county from Graham County to Thomas County.  United States Highway 83 cuts the northwest corner from Decatur County, north, to Thomas County, west.  The county is a rectangle with Hoxie located near the county’s center.  Hoxie is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 49.4% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced HOX-EE.
