The taller corners of the 1931 Art Deco courthouse add to its appearance.  It is sited on Broadway between 8th and 9th streets.  Kansas State Highway 27 bypasses the center of the town 12 blocks west of the courthouse.  Routledge and Hertz are the building architects of masonry and light brown brick facility.  There was an earlier 1888 courthouse also in Goodland, the only county seat.  A settlers’ statue and Liberty Bell sit on the grounds.  The county was created on September 20, 1886 from Native American Territory as the 99th county.  Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman is the county namesake.  The county seat is named for Goodland, Indiana. 

Sherman County government consists of a sheriff, a clerk, an attorney, a treasurer, a coroner, and an appraiser (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Eight District Court Judges serve Sherman, Cheyenne, Logan, Rawlins, Sheridan, Thomas, and Wallace counties (judicial.) Sherman County is in western Kansas on the border with Colorado.  Dodge City, Kansas is southeast and Denver, Colorado is west of the county.  The county center is 8.4 miles Southwest of Goodland.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Cheyenne, Rawlins, Thomas, Logan, and Wallace counties and Colorado. 

The area of the county is 1056 square miles.  It is 14 out of 105 in the state.  It ranks 58 out of 105 in population in the state.  It has a density of 5.6 persons per square mile making it 70 out of 105 in the state.  Sherman County has 77.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 70 crosses the county east to west from Thomas County to Colorado.  United States Highway 24 is joined with Interstate Highway 70 from Thomas County to Colorado.  The county is a rectangle.  Goodland is located near the center of the county.  Goodland is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 75.3% of the county population.
