The brown and black brick Neo-Classical look is improved with columns in the 1925 courthouse.  The design was provided by Smith and English.  Carpet floors yield to a circle for the stairs.  The facility is on a square surrounded by Main, Logan, Chestnut and Sherman streets.  United States Highway 160 is three blocks north of the location.  Stanton County was formed on March 23, 1887 from Hamilton County as the 105th and last county with Johnson City as the only county seat.  The county is named for Secretary of War Edward M. Stanton.  The county seat is named for railroad official A. S. Johnson. 

Stanton County government consists of a sheriff, a clerk, an attorney, a treasurer, a coroner, and an appraiser (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Eight District Court Judges serve Stanton, Grant, Haskell, Morton, Seward, and Stevens counties (judicial.) Stanton County is in western Kansas.  Colorado is on its western border.  Dodge City, Kansas is northeast and Pueblo, Colorado is northwest of the county.  The county center is in Johnson City .6 miles South-Southwest of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Hamilton, Kearny, Grant, Stevens, and Morton counties and Colorado. 

The area of the county is 680 square miles.  It is 71 out of 105 in the state.  It ranks 99 out of 105 in population in the state.  It has a density of 3.1 persons per square mile making it 90 out of 105 in the state.  Stanton County has 76.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 160 crosses the county from east to west from Grant County to Colorado.  Stanton County is a square.  Johnson is located slightly east of center in the county.  Johnson is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 70.1% of the county population.
