The red/brown brick and concrete Modern Judicial Building was built in 2012.  It is located at West Main and Cemetery streets.  Kentucky State Highway 101 is one block east of the courthouse.  Sherman Carter Barnhart provided the designs.  The 1967 courthouse is combined with Scottsville City Hall across the street.  The county was organized on January 14, 1815 with Scottsville as the only county seat and has had 1903 and 1967 courthouses.  The county was created from parts of Barren and Warren counties as the 57th county.  The county is named for War of 1812 hero Colonel John Allen.  The county seat is named for Governor Charles Scott.  He is also the namesake of Scott County. 

Allen County government consists of a sheriff, County Judge Executive, and 5 Magistrates.  One Circuit Court Judge, One District Court Judge, and One Family Court Judge serve Allen and Simpson counties.  The county is in southern Kentucky on the border with Tennessee.  Bowling Green, Kentucky is directly northwest of the county.  The county center is 2.2 miles Northwest of Scottsville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Barren and Monroe counties and Tennessee and Simpson and Warren counties. 

The area of the county is 346 square miles.  It is 48 out of 120 in the state.  It ranks 54 out of 120 in population in the state.  It has a density of 59.5 persons per square mile making it 61 out of 120 in the state.  Allen County has 20.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 31 East crosses northeast to south in the county from Barren County to Tennessee.  United States Highway 231 comes in from the northwest, Warren County, and combined with United States Highway 31 East to head south, Tennessee.  The county is an arrowhead.  Scottsville is in the southern third of the county.  Scottsville is the county seat and it is the only incorporated city thus it is the largest city.  It is 20.9% of the county population.
