The brown brick 1862 facility was added to in 1899. It is at Main and 4th streets. United States Highway 150 is Main Street in the town. James R. Carrigan provided the designs for this Italianate courthouse. The facility features a tower with a working clock and columns. The grounds have veteran memorials and a portico. The county was formed on February 15, 1842 from parts of Lincoln and Mercer counties as the 92nd county with Danville as the only county seat. Boyle County is named for Congressman John Boyle. The county seat is named for settler Walker Daniel who purchased the land for the site of the original town.

The county is in the central part of the state. Lexington, Kentucky is northeast and Louisville, Kentucky is northwest of the county. The county center is in Danville 2.8 miles West-Southwest of the city center. The county is surrounded clockwise by Mercer, Garrard, Lincoln, Casey, Marion, and Washington counties.

It has a density of 168.2 persons per square mile making it 17 out of 120 in the state. Boyle County has 66.2% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 68 clips the northwest corner of the county from Mercer County, north, to Marion County, west. United States Highway 127 goes north to south in the county from Mercer County to Lincoln County. United States Highway 150 travels southeast to west from Lincoln County to Washington County. The county looks like a cake pan. Danville is in the northeast quarter of the county. Danville is the county seat and the largest city. It is 56.3% of the county population. The county is pronounced BOIL. This county is in the Danville Micropolitan Statistical Area.
