A red brick Beaux Arts courthouse serves Bullitt County.  The courthouse is on Buckmann and 3rd streets.  Kentucky State Highway 61 is Buckmann.  It was built in 1902 and enlarged in 2004.  Mason Maury is the designer.  A Justice Center was built in 2007.  The building is being renovated in 2019.  Bullitt County was created on December 13, 1796 from parts of Jefferson and Nelson counties as the 21st county.  Shepherdsville has always been the county seat.  The county is named for one of the founders of the Kentucky state government, Alexander Scott Bullitt.  The county seat is named for city founder Adam Shepherd.  Bullitt County was the birthplace of 1 Kentucky Governor, James T. Morehead. 

Bullitt County government consists of a County Judge Executive, a sheriff, a clerk, an attorney, a treasurer, a coroner, and an appraiser (executive).  It has 4 Magistrates (legislative.)  Two Circuit Court Judges, Two District Court Judges, One Family Court Judge and a court clerk serves Bullitt County (judicial.) The county is in north central Kentucky directly south of Louisville, Kentucky.  The county center is in Shepherdsville 2.8 miles East of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Jefferson, Spencer, Nelson, and Hardin counties. 

The area of the county is 299 square miles.  It is 66 out of 120 in the state.  It ranks 10 out of 120 in population in the state.  It has a density of 275.0 persons per square mile making it 9 out of 120 in the state.  Bullitt County has 57.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 65 goes north to south through the county from Jefferson County to Hardin County.  United States Highways 31 East/150 clip the northeast corner of the county from Jefferson County to Spencer County.  United States Highways 31 West/60 cut the northwest corner from Jefferson County to Hardin County.  The county is a triangle.  Shepherdsville is in the western third of the county.  Shepherdsville is the county seat and Mount Washington is the largest city.  Shepherdsville is 17.3% of the county population and Mount Washington is 22.0% of the county population.  This county is in the Louisville/Jefferson County Metropolitan Statistical Area.
