The clock dome on the 1913 Classical Revival building stands out. There is a 1998 Justice Center in Murray. Andrew J. Bryan provided the designs for the tan brick courthouse. After the county was organized in 1823, Wadesboro had an 1823 courthouse. The county was created from Hickman County. Marshall County was separated on November 3, 1822 as the 72nd county. Wadesboro became the county seat when Marshall County separated followed by Murray in 1843. The building is in a square at 5th, Maple, 4th, and Main streets. United States Highway 641 Business is 4th Street in the town. The courthouse features columns and veteran memorials are on the grounds. A Justice Center augments the courthouse. The county’s namesake is Colonel Richard Calloway from French-Indian War fame. The county seat is named for Congressman John L. Murray.

The county center is 3.4 miles Northeast of Murray. The county is surrounded clockwise by Marshall and Trigg counties and Tennessee and Graves County.

It has a density of 96.1 persons per square mile making it 33 out of 120 in the state. Calloway County has 47.7% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 641 travels north to south in the county from Marshall County to Tennessee. The county is an overall rectangle. The Tennessee River forms its eastern border. Murray is located near the county’s center. Murray is the county seat and the largest city. It is 46.7% of the county population. This county is in the Murray Micropolitan Statistical Area.
