The classic Victorian and Second Empire 1883 dark red brick structure sits on 4th between York, Court, Columbia and 4th streets in Newport.  United States Highway 27 is York Street.  The structure was renovated in 2012.  Albert C. Nash provided the building designs.  An Administrative Center was built in 2009 and a Justice Center was added in 2011.  The Newport Courthouse features a tower with a working clock.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  The 1842 classic Greek Revival white brick building in Alexandria is at Main and Riley.  Kentucky State Highway 10 is Main Street.  Reverend James Jolly is this courthouse architect.  The building was remodeled and enlarged in 1928.  Wilmington (1794), Newport (1797), Visalia (1823), Newport (1824), Alexandria (1840) have all served as county seat.  Newport and Alexandria have jointly been the county seat since 2010.  The county was established on December 17, 1794 from parts of Harrison, Mason and Scott counties as the 18th county.  Campbell County is named for Louisville founder Colonel John Campbell.  Alexandria gets its name from Alexandria, Virginia.  Newport is named for the commander of the English ships landing at Jamestown, Christopher Newport.  

Campbell County government consists of a County Judge Executive, a sheriff, a clerk, an attorney, a treasurer, a coroner, and an appraiser (executive).  It has 3 Magistrates (legislative.)  Two Circuit Court Judges, Three District Court Judges, One Family Court Judge and a court clerk serve Campbell County (judicial.) The county is in the north on the border with Ohio.  Cincinnati, Ohio is directly across the Ohio River from the county.  The county center is 5 miles South of Alexandria nearer Grants Lick.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Ohio and Pendleton and Kenton counties. 

The area of the county is 152 square miles.  It is 116 out of 120 in the state.  It ranks 8 out of 120 in population in the state.  It has a density of 612.3 persons per square mile making it 4 out of 120 in the state.  Campbell County has 81.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 27 passes north to south in the county from Ohio to Pendleton County.  The county looks like an upside-down funnel.  Alexandria is near the center of the county.  Fort Thomas is on the northern tip of the county across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, OH.  Alexandria is the county seat and Fort Thomas is the largest city.  Alexandria is 11.1% of the county population while Fort Thomas is 18.7% of the county population.  This county is in the Cincinnati-Middletown Metropolitan Statistical Area.
