A red/brown brick Italianate courthouse for Edmonson County was erected in 1872.  It is on Washington, Main, Cross Main and Jackson streets.  Main Street is Kentucky State Highway 70 in the town.  James A. Shirley provided the building designs.  The structure was enlarged in 1997.  The building features a tower and veteran memorials are on the grounds.  The county was organized on January 12, 1825 from parts of Hart, Grayson, and Warren counties as the 78th county.  Brownsville has always been the county seat.  The county is named for War of 1812 hero Captain John Edmonson.  The county seat is named for General Jacob Brown hero of the War of 1812. 

Edmonson County government consists of a County Judge Executive, a sheriff, a clerk, an attorney, a treasurer, a coroner, and an appraiser (executive).  It has 6 Magistrates (legislative.)  Two Circuit Court Judges, Two District Court Judges, and One Family Court Judge serve Edmonson, Butler, Hancock and Ohio counties and a court clerk serves Edmonson County (judicial.) The county is in south central Kentucky.  Bowling Green, Kentucky is directly to the southwest of the county.  The county center is 2.7 miles East of Brownsville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Grayson, Hart, Barren, Warren, and Butler counties. 

The area of the county is 303 square miles.  It is 64 out of 120 in the state.  It ranks 90 out of 120 in population in the state.  It has a density of 40.0 persons per square mile making it 83 out of 120 in the state.  Edmonson County has 7.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 65 clips the southeast corner of the county from Barren County to Warren County.  United States Highway 31 West parallels Interstate Highway 65 from Barren to Warren counties.  The county is an overall pentagon bent toward the east.  Brownsville is in the southwest quarter of the county.  Brownsville is the county seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city.  It is 7.2% of the county population.  This county is in the Bowling Green Metropolitan Statistical Area.
