The light brown brick Greek Revival courthouse for Grant County was built in 1937.  Built on Main Street at Court Street, this facility replaced an 1856 courthouse.  United States Highway 25 is Main Street in the town.  The courthouse was remodeled in 1976.  A Justice Center was built in 2009.  The courthouse features columns and a tower.  A Records Building sits next door.  The county was created on November 2, 1820 from Pendleton County as the 64th county with Williamstown as the only county seat.  The county’s namesake is Colonel John Grant.  The county seat is named for landowner William Arnold.  E. C. and G. T. Landberg were the architects. 

Grant County government consists of a sheriff, County Judge Executive, and 3 Magistrates.  Two Circuit Court Judges and One District Court Judge serve Grant Carroll, and Owen counties.  Grant County is in north Kentucky south of Cincinnati, Ohio and north of Lexington, Kentucky.  The county center is in Williamstown 3.5 miles Northwest of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Boone, Kenton, Pendleton, Harrison, Scott, Owen, and Gallatin counties. 

The area of the county is 260 square miles.  It is 79 out of 120 in the state.  It ranks 45 out of 120 in population in the state.  It has a density of 95.9 persons per square mile making it 34 out of 120 in the state.  Grant County has 41.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 75 goes north to south in the county from Boone County to Scott County.  United States Highway 25 parallels Interstate Highway 75 from Boone to Scott counties.  Grant County is shaped like the home plate of a baseball field.  Williamstown is in the eastern quarter of the county and extends into Pendleton County.  Williamstown is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 15.9% of the county population.  This county is in the Cincinnati-Middletown Metropolitan Statistical Area.
