The 1931 red brick Georgian courthouse is on Court and 1st streets in the town.  United States Highway 68 is two blocks to the east of the site.  Edgar W. Archer provided the designs.  A Justice Center was added in 2010 across the street.  Green County was formed on December 20, 1792 from Lincoln and Nelson counties as the 15th county.  There was an 1802 courthouse also in Greensburg, the only county seat.  The county was named for Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene.  He is also the source for the county seat name and the name of the county seat of Muhlenberg County. 

Green County government consists of a sheriff, County Judge Executive, and 5 Magistrates.  Two Circuit Court Judges and Two District Court Judges serve Green, Marion, Taylor and Washington counties.  The county is situated in south Kentucky.  Louisville, Kentucky is north and Bowling Green, Kentucky is southwest of the county.  The county center is 5.5 miles West of Greensburg.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Larue, Taylor, Adair, Metcalfe, and Hart counties. 

The area of the county is 289 square miles.  It is 69 out of 120 in the state.  It ranks 96 out of 120 in population in the state.  It has a density of 38.4 persons per square mile making it 90 out of 120 in the state.  Green County has 19.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 68 goes northeast to south in the county from Taylor County to Metcalfe County.  The county is shaped like a tied sack.  Greensburg is in the southeast quarter of the county.  Greensburg is the county seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city.  It is 19.6% of the county population.
