The Greek Revival look to the 1848 courthouse stands out in this city.  The courthouse is on a square at Main, 1st, Irvine, and 2nd streets.  United States Highway 25 Business is Main Street in Richmond.  Major Thomas Lewinski provided the designs for this white brick structure.  The building was remodeled in 1880 and restored in 1965.  The structure features a tower with a working clock.  A 1999 Justice Center was added for support using a former Post Office.  The county was established on December 15, 1785 and named for Virginia statesman and later President James Madison.  He is also the named for the county seat of Hopkins County.  The county was taken from Lincoln County as the 6th county.  The county seat is named for Richmond, Virginia.  Milford was the first county seat and replaced by Richmond in 1798.  Madison County was the birthplace of 1 Kentucky Governor, James B. McCreary. 

Madison County government consists of a sheriff, County Judge Executive, and 4 Magistrates.  Three Circuit Court Judges, Four District Court Judges, and Two Family Court Judges serve Madison and Clark counties.  Madison County lies south of Lexington, Kentucky in east central Kentucky.  The county center is 2.9 miles South-Southwest of Richmond.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Clark, Estill, Jackson, Rockcastle, Garrard, Jessamine, and Fayette counties. 

The area of the county is 441 square miles.  It is 22 out of 120 in the state.  It ranks 9 out of 120 in population in the state.  It has a density of 210.2 persons per square mile making it 14 out of 120 in the state.  Madison County has 54.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 75 goes north to south through the county from Fayette County to Rockcastle County.  United States Highway 25 parallels Interstate Highway 75 from Fayette to Rockcastle counties.  United States Highway 421 is joined with United States Highway 25 from Fayette County, splits and continues southeast into Jackson County.  The county looks like a vase.  Richmond is located near the center of the county.  Richmond is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 37.3% of the county population.  This county is in the Richmond-Berea Micropolitan Statistical Area.
