The old 1868 courthouse now augments the new Modern 2003 concrete courthouse. The old courthouse is on a square at Stockton, East, Hamilton, and Main streets. United States Highway 68 turns at Stockton and Main streets. Brandstetter Carroll Inc., is the courthouse designer. The new red brick and concrete courthouse is at Stockton and East streets. Veteran memorials are on the old courthouse grounds. The county was established on May 1, 1860 and named for Governor Thomas Metcalfe. The county was created from parts of Adair, Barren, Cumberland, Green, and Monroe counties as the 109th county. The county seat is named for settler Edmund P. Rogers. Edmonton has always been the county seat.

Metcalfe County is in the south part of the state. Louisville, Kentucky is north and Bowling Green, Kentucky is west of the county. The county center is 3.2 miles Northwest of Edmonton. The county is surrounded clockwise by Green, Adair, Cumberland, Monroe, Barren, and Hart counties.

United States Highway 68 enters the county from the north, Green County, and exits to the west, Barren County. The county is shaped like a rocking chair. Edmonton is in the southern third of the county. Edmonton is the county seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city. It is 15.5% of the county population. This county is in the Glasgow Micropolitan Statistical Area.
