A red brick and concrete Beaux Arts courthouse was built in 1907 to serve the county.  It is on a square surrounded by Main, Court, Main Cross, and Court Row.  United States Highway 62 is Main Street in this part of the town.  Kenneth McDonald and Todd are the courthouse architects.  A Judicial Center was built in 2004 beside the courthouse.  The building features a dome with a working clock and columns.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  Greenville has always been the county seat.  The county was established on December 14, 1798 from Logan and Christian counties as the 31st county.  It is named for Revolutionary War hero John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg.  Greenville is named for Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene.  He is also the namesake for Green County and its county seat. 

Muhlenberg County government consists of a sheriff, County Judge Executive, and 5 Magistrates.  One Circuit Court Judge and One District Court Judge serve Muhlenberg and McLean counties.  The county lies in western Kentucky.  Owensboro, Kentucky is north and Bowling Green, Kentucky is southeast of the county.  The county center is 3.7 miles Northeast of Greenville in Powderly.  The county is surrounded clockwise by McLean, Ohio, Butler, Logan, Todd, Christian, and Hopkins counties. 

The area of the county is 475 square miles.  It is 15 out of 120 in the state.  It ranks 33 out of 120 in population in the state.  It has a density of 65.1 persons per square mile making it 56 out of 120 in the state.  Muhlenberg County has 38.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 62 crosses the county east to west from Ohio County to Hopkins County.  United States Highway 431 goes north to south from McLean County to Logan County.  The county looks like a popped kernel of popcorn.  Greenville is slightly west and south of center in the county.    Central City is in the northeast near the border.  Greenville is the county seat and Central City is the largest city.  Greenville is 14.5% of the county population while Central City is 18.8% of the county population.  The county is pronounced MUL-EN-BERG.  This county is in the Central City Micropolitan Statistical Area.
