An outstanding red/brown brick French Second Empire courthouse was built in 1877 on the square at Main and Court streets.  United States Highway 460 is Main Street in the city.  Thomas Boyd was the courthouse architect.  The building was renovated in 1994.  A Justice Building was added in 1990.  The courthouse features a tower with a working clock and a Lady Justice statue.  The county was established on June 1, 1792 from Woodford County as the 10th county with Georgetown as the only county seat.  It is named for Revolutionary War hero General Charles Scott.  He is also the namesake for the county seat of Allen County.  Georgetown is named for President George Washington.  He is also the namesake of Washington County.  Scott County was the birthplace of 1 Kentucky Governor, James F. Robinson. 

Scott County government consists of a sheriff, County Judge Executive, and 7 Magistrates.  Two Circuit Court Judges, Two District Court Judges, and One Family Court Judge serve Scott, Bourbon, and Woodford counties.  The county is in north central Kentucky directly north of Lexington, Kentucky.  The county center is 7.7 miles North of Georgetown nearer Oxford.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Grant, Harrison, Bourbon, Fayette, Woodford, Franklin, and Owen counties. 

The area of the county is 285 square miles.  It is 71 out of 120 in the state.  It ranks 17 out of 120 in population in the state.  It has a density of 200.5 persons per square mile making it 15 out of 120 in the state.  Scott County has 67.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 64 cuts the southern tip of the county from east to west from Fayette County to Franklin County.  Interstate Highway 75 passes north to south in the county from Grant County to Fayette County.  United States Highway 25 parallels Interstate Highway 75 from Grant to Fayette counties.  United States Highway 62 goes east to west from Harrison County to Woodford County.  United States Highway 421 parallels Interstate Highway 64 from Fayette to Franklin counties.  United States Highway 460 travels east to west from Bourbon County to Franklin County.  The county is a hexagon.  Georgetown is in the south quarter of the county.  Georgetown is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 65.7% of the county population.  This county is in the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area.
