The columns stand out on the 1914 dark red brick Beaux Arts facility.  It is located on Main Street and Main Cross Street.  Kentucky State Highway 44 is Main Street in the town.  The courthouse architect is Gasway W. Boules.  The building was enlarged in 1974.  It features columns and veteran memorials are across the street.  An Annex is located across Main Cross Street.  The county was organized on January 1, 1824 from parts of Nelson, Shelby, and Bullitt counties.  The county is named for Battle of Tippecanoe hero Captain Spier Spencer.  It was formed for Bullitt, Nelson and Shelby counties as the 77th county.  The county seat was named for landowner Robert Taylor.  Taylorsville has always been the county seat. 

Spencer County government consists of a sheriff, County Judge Executive, and 5 Magistrates.  Two Circuit Court Judges, One District Court Judge, and One Family Court Judge serve Spencer, Anderson, and Shelby counties.  Spencer County is in central Kentucky directly southeast of Louisville, Kentucky.  The county center is in Taylorsville .5 miles Northeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Shelby, Anderson, Nelson, Bullitt, and Jefferson counties. 

The area of the county is 186 square miles.  It is 110 out of 120 in the state.  It ranks 61 out of 120 in population in the state.  It has a density of 104.5 persons per square mile making it 25 out of 120 in the state.  Spencer County has 6.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highways 31 East/150 cut the western tip of the county from Jefferson County, northwest, to Nelson County, south.  The county is shaped like a funnel with the point heading southeast.  Taylorsville is located near the center of the county.  Taylorsville is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city.  It is 6.4% of the county population.  This county is in the Louisville/Jefferson County Metropolitan Statistical Area.
