The current red brick facility is a Classical Revival 1884 courthouse significantly remodeled in 1952.  The facility is on a square at Church, Main, Spring, and West streets.  United States Highway 42 is Main Street.  H. P. McDonald & Brothers provided the designs.  An eagle sits in front of the courthouse along with veteran memorials.  The building features a balcony.  The county was established on February 9, 1837 from parts of Gallatin, Henry, and Oldham counties as the 86th county with Bedford as the only county seat.  It is named for United States Supreme Court Justice William Trimble.  The county seat is named for Bedford, Virginia. 

The area of the county is 149 square miles.  It is 117 out of 120 in the state.  It ranks 107 out of 120 in population in the state.  It has a density of 56.8 persons per square mile making it 62 out of 120 in the state.  Trimble County has 13.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 42 parallels Interstate Highway 71 northeast to southwest from Carroll County to Oldham County.  United States Highway 421 enters from the north, Indiana, to the south, Henry County.  The county is shaped like a sled facing to the southwest.  Bedford is in the southern half of the county.  Bedford is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 6.2% of the county population.  Louisville, Kentucky is southwest and Cincinnati, Ohio is northeast of the county. 

Trimble County government consists of a County Judge Executive, a sheriff, a clerk, an attorney, a treasurer, a coroner, and an appraiser (executive).  It has 4 Magistrates (legislative.)  Two Circuit Court Judges, Two District Court Judges, and One Family Court Judge serve Trimble, Henry, and Oldham counties and a court clerk serves Trimble County (judicial.) Trimble County is on the northern border with Indiana.  The county center is .7 miles North-Northeast of Bedford.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Indiana and Carroll, Henry, and Oldham counties.  This county is in the Louisville/Jefferson County Metropolitan Statistical Area.
