The red brick and concrete Classical Revival courthouse was built in 1871 and remodeled in 1938 on a square at Main, Court, O’Bannon, and Morgan streets.  United States Highway 60 is Morgan Street in the town.  J. K. Frick is the building architect.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  Union County was formed on January 15, 1811 from Henderson County as the 56th county.  There was also an 1820 courthouse in Morganfield the only county seat.  Its name comes from the uniting of local citizens to form the new county.  Morganfield is named for Revolutionary War hero General Daniel Morgan.  He is also the namesake of Morgan County.  Union County was the birthplace of 1 Kentucky Governor, Earle C. Clements. 

Union County government consists of a County Judge Executive, a sheriff, a clerk, an attorney, a treasurer, a coroner, and an appraiser (executive).  It has 5 Magistrates (legislative.)  One Circuit Court Judge, Two District Court Judges, and One Family Court Judge serve Union, Crittenden, and Webster counties and a court clerk serves Union County (judicial.) The county is located in northwest Kentucky on the Ohio River border with both Illinois and Indiana.  Owensboro, Kentucky is east and Paducah, Kentucky is southwest of the county.  The county center is 4.2 miles Southwest of Morganfield nearer Grove Center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Indiana and Henderson, Webster, and Crittenden counties and Illinois. 

The area of the county is 345 square miles.  It is 51 out of 120 in the state.  It ranks 81 out of 120 in population in the state.  It has a density of 39.6 persons per square mile making it 86 out of 120 in the state.  Union County has 45.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 60 crosses the county northeast to southwest from Henderson County to Crittenden County.  The county looks like a teapot facing northeast.  Morganfield is located near the center of the county.  Morganfield is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 23.8% of the county population.
